Underwood laboratories (UL), an independent product safety certification agency in northbrook, Illinois, has issued the first edition of ANSI/UL8750 'LED lighting product safety standard', which sets uniform global safety requirements for the entire supply chain of LED lighting products and led-related components.

'The 8750 UL certification provides manufacturers with a unique safety standard for testing their LED products and related components sold in the United States.' 'Said alberto ujeti, general manager of UL certified lighting.

In North America, several U.S. accredited test laboratories (NRTLs), including UL, have the right to conduct safety testing and certification of LED products in accordance with the standard, which now includes the UL8750.

Under the impetus of the global efficient clean energy technology, LED by more and more used in lighting products, from the general lighting and pool lighting to electronic signs and holiday lights, etc. With the development of LED technology, there are potential safety problems in high voltage and lighting as well as some new applications: the risks of overheating, electric shock and fire need to be addressed.

In response to these safety concerns, UL hosted more than 100 summits of stakeholders including manufacturers, governments, research and testing institutions to discuss the proliferation of LED technology and its future applications in lighting design and manufacturing.

With keen insights from the summit and over 80 years of experience in lighting safety, UL developed the current UL 8750 based on three guidelines or safety regulations issued in January 2007.
